Dr. Marta Canfield of Canfield Integrative MD, has put together a stand alone course you can take at your own pace to experience some of the techniques she uses in her consultations.

In this course, you will go through the major points of an Integrative Women's Hormonal Health (WHH) consult with Dr. Canfield. It is a basic outline with 8 steps grouped into three lessons as introduction to each topic covered - from a deep dive into your life history through a basic elimination diet, mindfulness practice and a basic exercise program.

If you are unsure if you want/can afford a one on one consult with Dr. Canfield, this is a great first step.

In fact, for all new consultations, this is a prerequisite course.

"My goal is to be a guide to my patients, helping them build their own specific toolbox of strategies for wellness, so they eventually don't need to see me."
Marta Canfield, MD

This self-led course is for you if:

  • You want a 1 on 1 consultation with Dr. Canfield or you are curious what her consults include. (This is a prerequisite to a 1 on 1 consult.)
  • You're overwhelmed with where to start with your bothersome symptoms.
  • You are motivated to make some change in your life.

This self-led course is NOT for you if:

  • You do not want to make diet or lifestyle changes.
  • You are looking for a 'one pill fixes all' type solution to your symptoms.
  • You are not willing to look into yourself and do the deep dive work of getting to the root cause(s) of your symptoms.

Please know that this is for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. It is important to me to have 'pre-educated' women (assigned female at birth) before embarking on a consultation with someone. This is not meant to diagnose or treat a medical condition. By taking this course it does not imply a doctor-patient relationship with Dr. Canfield. If you are unsure about making diet and exercise changes, or are on prescription medications, please consult your own primary care doctor first.

Dr. Marta Canfield, MD (she/her)

I see the doctor-patient relationship differently. Patients at Canfield Integrative Medical Arts have an interest in general wellness, prevention, and natural care and will accept conventional medical care when warranted. They are willing to spend the time getting to the bottom of their medical conditions which is often a marathon rather than a sprint. They understand that the most sustainable solution won’t always be the quickest fix. They’re willing to look at themselves objectively even though it can get uncomfortable - often this is when the most progress is made. My patients understand that the doctor-patient relationship is one of a team. As a physician, my job is to help educate and guide you to safe treatments and lifestyle choices with evidence-based options.

I share your interest in general wellness, prevention, and natural care while not ignoring the advances of Western (conventional) medicine. (If patients do not hold this same philosophy, we may not be a good fit.) The goal is to get to the root cause of your health concerns, not give you a quick fix that won't stand the test of time.

Together, we work to create a plan of care that is personalized to you, your symptoms, and your life. If you choose to schedule a consultation, I will be an advisor, providing you with information, research, and support. Together we create a 'toolbox' of strategies you can use in your everyday life, eventually reducing your need for frequent visits. We agree upon the follow up schedule of visits based on your progression. (That can vary from monthly visits to twice a year visits and anything in between.) Ultimately, it is up to you to make the changes: mind, body and spirit. I will give you the information you need about the options available so you can make a decision about what changes you make, whether it be about diet, lifestyle changes, supplements, medications, testing, or referrals to other providers/practitioners. And when I do not have an answer or knowledge on something that comes up, I will say so and utilize my support system of like-minded providers and research options for us to try.

The direction your whole health takes is up to you – but we will work on that path together.

Here are the 8 topics we cover in this course:

Step 1: Your History
Taking a health history (including major life stressors - good and bad) starting with your mother's health before you were born to present day, is a key element of getting to the root causes of your symptoms.

Step 2: Assessing Readiness to Change
Knowing your current stage of Readiness to Change (how ready are you to take action to make habit changes) and your Self-Efficacy (how you respond to adversity in life) are two important areas to learn about yourself before embarking on this wellness journey.

Step 3: Tracking your Menstrual Cycle
Tracking your menstrual cycle is very important. In fact, it has been called your 6th vital sign. If you are taking a hormonal birth control or are menopausal, skip this section. Instead reflect on and write down what your periods used to be like in the past as that is very helpful still.

Step 4: Food Journal
Writing down what you eat and timing of your symptoms without judgment will be very helpful for you to start to 'see' patterns between your diet and symptoms.

Step 5: Medical Symptom Questionnaires
Questionnaires and quizzes about your symptoms are quantitative ways to look at your symptoms - initially to help guide us to root causes of your symptoms. Use them over and over to track your progress and symptoms over time!

Step 6: Elimination Diet
Elimination diets are the gold standard to determine if a food causes symptoms (no matter how big or small). This lesson goes over a basic food elimination diet to get you started.

Step 7: Mindfulness
Often one of the last things we think about is how our thoughts are affecting our physical symptoms. Learning to be mindful in your everyday life can be the missing piece to resolving your symptoms. This is often a life-long learning process.

Step 8: Movement/Exercise
The human body is meant to MOVE! Movement as well as an exercise practice is essential to physical and mental wellbeing. There is a sample exercise routine for you to try in this course.
